Prison Conditions

Prison Conditions

Governments have a responsibility under international law to treat prisoners humanely. However, prisoners are often exposed to potentially deadly conditions in detention facilities. Torture or ill-treatment, such as prolonged solitary confinement, is used to break the minds and bodies of detainees. Medical conditions that were once properly managed can become life-threatening due to ignored or insufficient care. Furthermore, prisoners separated from their loved ones for extended periods of time can develop tremendous mental health burdens.

Freedom Now documents prison conditions around the world and advocates for better treatment of prisoners.
