Today we announce that after 15 years as Executive Director, Maran Turner will depart Freedom Now at the end of 2023.
We are sad to see Maran leave but are filled with gratitude for her years of service. As Freedom Now’s first full-time employee, Maran shaped the organization’s mission and direction for more than a decade. Maran transformed Freedom Now from an all-volunteer project into an international human rights organization that punches far above its weight. Thanks to her dedication, Freedom Now has supported hundreds of prisoners of conscience (the majority of whom have been released from wrongful detention) and worked to address broader human rights crises, such as the situation in Afghanistan.
Maran also has built a solid organizational foundation that will allow Freedom Now to thrive for years to come. She assembled a dedicated and skilled team, supported an active and diverse board, and established strong relationships with partners and supporters. Maran’s leadership will be greatly missed. We wish her the very best in the next chapter of her career.
Over the next several months, the Board will conduct a thorough search for Freedom Now’s next Executive Director. It is our priority to find a dynamic leader with a passion for our mission of protecting individuals and communities from government repression and defending human rights through direct legal support, targeted high-leverage advocacy, and on the ground capacity-building. We will share the job announcement soon and will welcome assistance in identifying candidates to lead Freedom Now into the future.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Zucker
