HONORARY CO-CHAIRS

The Honorable Václav Havel is a Czech writer and dramatist. He was the tenth and last President of Czechoslovakia (1989-1992) and first President of the Czech Republic (1992-2003).  He has written more than 20 plays and numerous works of non-fiction, many of which have received international acclaim. Beginning in the 1960s, his work turned to focus on the politics of Czechoslovakia. After the Prague Spring, he became increasingly active. In 1977, his involvement with the human rights manifesto Charter 77 brought him international fame as the leader of the opposition in Czechoslovakia. The communist regime sentenced him to four-and-a-half years imprisonment for subversion of the Republic and he served as a prisoner of conscience from 1979-1983. The 1989 "Velvet Revolution" launched Havel into the presidency. In this role he led Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic to capitalism and multi-party democracy.

The Most Reverend Desmond M. Tutu is a South African cleric and activist who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. In 1984, Tutu became the second South African to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Tutu was elected and ordained the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa.  He chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and is currently the chairman of The Elders. Tutu is vocal in his defense of human rights and uses his high profile to campaign for the oppressed in such countries as Burma, Sudan, and Zimbabwe.  He also also campaigns to fight AIDS, poverty, and racism.
